M-Teto is a holistic ed-tech intervention aimed at preventing and adequately responding to incidences of school related-gender-based violence; as well as to respond to and prevent related social, education, economic and public health risks and consequences (back-street abortions, unwanted child pregnancy, HIV infection, school-drop outs, mental illness and suicides). In other words, the application immerses the child into a safe space where they can learn and unlearn and then equips them with practical tools to empower them as potential victims or bystanders. Intended Social Impact i. Preventing and responding to School Based Gender Based Violence, therefore leading to reduced incidences, thereof; ii. Preventing and responding to the economic, social and public health risks associated with incidences of school-based gender-based violence, this includes unwanted pregnancy and illegal abortions; girl children dropping out of school; HIV infection; depression/suicides; and high economic expenditure on dealing with school-based gender based violence which can and could have been prevented. iii. Reduced gender inequality, increased access to basic education for school girls, increased access to justice ecosystem for all children; and assisting the country in reaching its mandated United Nations Sustainable development goals: #3, #4, #5 and #16.

M-Teto, meaning the ‘law’ and ‘the way things should be’ in isiZulu, is a mobile gaming application and school-based intervention that teaches law, the unlearning of toxic social and gender norms. Our vision is to prevent and eradicate all school-related gender based violence (SRGBV) through influencing consensual and non-consensual behaviours; using artificial intelligence and gamification. What We Do

M-Teto was Founded in 2017, by Ms Thando Gumede as a solution to help eradicate SRGBV after witnessing a former schoolmate get raped by a group of boys at school. This, is her story. Founder’s Story “When I was in grade 9, a fellow school peer of mine, whom I had known since primary school, was gang-raped by a group of school boys. The whole ordeal was caught on camera; and the recording went viral among the children of my school. Upon my many attempts to recall the memories of the ordeal, I still do not recall seeing a single one of the five boys who were apart of the sexual violation stopping or reprimanding one another. Not even the camera boy stopped to intervene.”

Ms Khaya Cokoto CTO M-Teto is run by an impressive all-female team of everyday super-sheros working tirelessly to help fulfill our vision.

Which has been tried and tested from past case studies conducted in countries with the same/ similar socio-economic contexts and enablers.

This not only heightens access and understanding, but it also ensures that the end-users do not experience trauma or repeated trauma from the featured graphics and language.

This encourages the user to question, negotiate and challenge violence and gender discrimination, which is critical for preventing SRGBV.

We view that the idea of living on another planet to be redundant if we cannot live among one another peacefully. If we cannot get along with one another here on Earth, what logic would prevail for us to seek and to destroy another planet?
